Why did you decide to write about a transgender detective?
I watched Parliament debate the Equal Marriage Act in 2013. I was astounded by the intensity of feeling generated, with people’s whole lives labelled and condemned by one aspect. It made my wonder how many times someone with that attitude meets someone who is LGBT, particularly when they are in a position of authority. I couldn’t get the idea out of my head and created a fictional world to explore it.
Is Meresbourne a real place and, if so, where is it?
No, I made Meresbourne up. I have given it its own backstory and tried to make it appropriate for its location, which is essentially on the Isle of Grain in north Kent. I wanted to create my own town to reduce the chance of anyone telling me that I’d got things wrong about the town’s history or geography.
Is the character of Robyn based on anyone?
No. Robyn is fictitious but some of the scenarios she finds herself in, the comments people make to her and their reactions are taken from real life.
